PPA Calls for Reopening Venezuela Border

PPA Parliamentarian Eduard Pieters is advocating for the reopening of the border with Venezuela, stating that the current closure is causing the island to lose economic and tourism opportunities. Pieters emphasized that the island should have acted to reopen its borders much earlier, noting that while the maritime border is open, the air border remains closed.

According to Pieters, Curaçao has maintained open borders with Venezuela for a considerable time. He argues that as long as Aruba’s border remains shut, merchants and tourists who wish to visit the island cannot do so, resulting in a loss of potential revenue and connection.

The parliamentarian also addressed the humanitarian aspect of the situation, describing the current arrival of individuals via small boats as inhumane. He highlighted the distress faced by families in Venezuela who are left without confirmation of their relatives’ safe arrival in Aruba. The PPA faction continues to urge the government to reconsider the border restrictions.
