ORANJESTAD (AAN) – A court in Oranjestad has sentenced a 49-year-old man, identified with initials A.B., to four years in prison for his complicity in the importation of 381 kilograms of marijuana. The sentencing, handed down last Friday, also includes the confiscation of two mobile phones used to coordinate the illicit operation.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the defendant has a prior criminal history, including two previous convictions for drug trafficking and one for human trafficking. During the trial, the prosecutor argued that A.B. played a critical role in the operation, citing evidence from the Police Intelligence Service. Investigators discovered messages on A.B.’s phone confirming his readiness to receive the shipment, as well as photos of the designated landing pier.
The defense team, led by attorney Mr. de Koning, argued for a lesser sentence, contending that the interception of the boat by the Coast Guard meant the importation was not fully realized and that A.B.’s role was limited to receiving the cargo. However, the judge ruled that evidence showed active coordination starting in May 2025, validating the charge of complicity. While the defendant claimed financial necessity, the court ultimately imposed the four-year sentence to reflect the severity of drug-related crimes and the risk to community safety.
