Ivo Valdes Questions If Government Serves People or a Small Group

ORANJESTAD (AAN): Ireno “Ivo” Valdes of the Public Pensioners Organization of Aruba (OPPA) has raised serious concerns about whether the government is truly governing for the people or for a small group.

Valdes pointed out that global conflicts are already having a direct or indirect impact on Aruba. Fuel prices have increased significantly, and as a result, the overall cost of living continues to rise. Although pensioners received a temporary compensation allowance, Valdes emphasized that inflation quickly absorbs these benefits.

According to Valdes, instead of reducing poverty, the government is managing it. He criticized the use of temporary allowances, stating that they are insufficient and only provide short-term relief. He questioned why the government does not incorporate these funds into permanent pension increases instead.

“We are struggling to keep up with rising prices. Fuel has gone up, and the cost of living has increased. Food is becoming a luxury. There are not enough care facilities to meet the waiting list demands. Pensioners will suffer the most. It is our citizens, especially our elderly, who will pay the price,” Valdes stated.

Valdes further questioned whether the government has a clear plan to protect the people during these challenging times. He stressed the need for a strong vision and concrete action to address the increasing cost of living and global uncertainties.

He also highlighted that Aruba’s economy depends heavily on tourism, but the benefits are not equally felt by the elderly population. This led him to raise a critical question: Is the government governing for the people, or for a small group?

Valdes concluded by urging that Aruba must adapt to global changes and be better prepared for the future, emphasizing that the people cannot continue to wait without proper planning and support.
