In a recent meeting that took place during the Inter-island Weganan, the Aruban Olympic Committee (COA) had the pleasure of hosting the board members and director of the “Federashon Deporte i Olímpiko Kòrsou” (FDOK), which is responsible for organizing sports in Curacao. Among the attendees were FDOK President Christine Dania, Secretary-General Sophyene Merien, and Director Gerard Charles. The visit was part of an effort to strengthen the relationship between the two islands and to discuss collaboration on various important topics related to sports and the well-being of athletes.

During the meeting, both organizations shared their mutual interest in enhancing the development of Olympic sports. The conversation covered the historical ties between the two islands, dating back to the time of the Antillean Islands, and highlighted the success of Curacao athletes who have represented their island at the Pan American and Olympic Games under the umbrella of COA.

Curacao does not currently have Olympic recognition, and therefore, athletes from Curacao who compete in Olympic-level events do so through the support of Aruba’s Olympic framework. Notable athletes like Philip Elhage and the van Aanholt siblings, Just and Philippine, have participated in various international competitions through COA’s channels, showcasing the importance of inter-island cooperation.

COA and FDOK both recognized the significant value in establishing a closer collaboration, focusing on athlete well-being and the advancement of sports on both islands. Both organizations emphasized the need to share knowledge and resources, aiming to raise the level of sports and provide more support for athletes. The organizations are committed to strengthening this partnership, recognizing that the ultimate goal is to ensure a better future for athletes in the region.

COA expressed its gratitude for the productive meeting and applauded the efforts of FDOK’s new board for their dedication to improving the welfare of athletes in Curacao. This partnership exemplifies the collaborative spirit between Aruba and Curacao in the realm of sports and will undoubtedly contribute to the growth of athletic talent in both countries.
