50 Million People Have Epilepsy Worldwide, Minister Says

ORANJESTAD (AAN) – In a segment on the program “Nos Mainta,” aired on Telearuba, Minister of Public Health and Social Affairs, Dr. Mervin Wyatt-Ras, explained that there are 50 million people have epilepsy worldwide. He noted that here in Aruba, one in every 200 people may have epilepsy, and there are currently about 500 people living with the condition on the island.

Minister Wyatt-Ras emphasized the importance of early detection and care, particularly for babies. “In the past, we didn’t look at it this way, but through the work of the foundation, I believe it’s crucial to reinforce their efforts, so people can receive recognition and support when they experience a seizure, and understand that they are not defined by it,” Minister Wyatt-Ras said.

He also stressed the need for greater awareness and specialized care, noting that it is difficult to find pediatric neurologists and specialists in Aruba, and the government is working on improving this situation. “It’s not a simple task, but it’s important to raise awareness within the healthcare sector, so we can have more neurologists to take care of patients,” the Minister added.

He reiterated that people with epilepsy can still lead productive lives. “I’ve seen individuals who work very well, and their colleagues are aware that when a person has a seizure, they need to stay calm and assist them. It doesn’t mean that the person can no longer contribute to society,” Minister Wyatt-Ras concluded.
