Aruba Court Sentences for Cocaine Trafficking in Ensure Bottles- On Thursday morning, the court found J.D.L.S.L. and J.A.K. guilty of participating in a cocaine trafficking operation to the Netherlands. The prosecutor requested a combined sentence for J.A.K., who transported the drugs, and 3 years for J.D.L.S.L., whom the prosecutor considered the organizer. After hearing the defense, the judge reduced the proposed sentences.

The case revolves around cocaine smuggled in Ensure bottles. The total weight of the liquid cocaine was 2.4 kilograms, but under the law, the weight was adjusted.

Cocaine Export:

The prosecutor outlined that on March 12, 2024, cocaine was exported to the Netherlands. J.D.L.S.L. was also accused of exporting cocaine between March 7, 2024, and April 25, 2024.

J.A.K. admitted to exporting cocaine via DHL in a package containing Ensure bottles. According to police reports, J.A.K. confessed to knowing the package contained cocaine and was paid 300 Florins for his involvement, while he had expected 500 Florins. The package was meant for Giovanni, also known as J.S.L..

The judge questioned J.D.L.S.L. about his involvement, but he denied any connection to the operation. However, the judge found that J.D.L.S.L. was involved in preparing the shipment and that V., a person caught at the airport with cocaine in his suitcase, had received the drugs for J.D.L.S.L. in the Netherlands. J.D.L.S.L. denied knowledge of V.‘s involvement, but the judge emphasized that the testimony from V. and J.A.K. was reliable.

Sentences:

For J.A.K., the judge sentenced him to 18 months in prison, with 116 days of the sentence conditional and 2 years of probation under Reclassering (Dutch probation service). The judge also ordered J.A.K. to complete 100 hours of community service, with 50 days in prison if he fails to comply.

For J.D.L.S.L., the judge sentenced him to 18 months in prison, with 9 months conditional and 2 years of probation.

The judge also considered the lessened weight of the liquid cocaine (900 grams instead of 2.4 kilograms) and the fact that J.A.K. was less responsible, according to a psychologist’s report.

Defense Arguments:

The defense for J.A.K. argued that he was less responsible due to psychological factors and requested a lighter sentence. The defense also questioned the investigation and the reliability of the evidence presented. However, the judge concluded that J.D.L.S.L. was indeed involved in the trafficking operation, supported by reliable testimony and evidence.
