Marilis Becker Brings Audience Back to the Spirit of Status Aparte, 40 Years Ago

A cultural event marking a meaningful start to 2026 took place Thursday night at the National Library of Aruba, where poetry, music, art, and literature came together to reflect on Aruba’s journey since Status Aparte.

In an interview with DIARIO, cultural manager and co-organizer Mirto Lacle explained that the event was designed as a broad artistic program aimed at celebrating Aruba’s identity and historical milestones. A central moment of the evening was a powerful poetry recital by Marilis Becker, who presented an emblematic poem originally written in 1985, just before Aruba achieved Status Aparte.

According to Lacle, Becker’s recital transported the audience back to the atmosphere of that pivotal moment 40 years ago. He noted that the program also included original compositions and artistic contributions that honored Aruba’s cultural evolution and resilience.

The event featured the work of professional sculptor Maritza Erasmus, whose sculptures focused on the human form, capturing both living figures and those who have passed on. Lacle highlighted that the evening also paid tribute to notable figures such as Robert Jeand’or, Etty Toppenberg, Padu Lampe, and others who helped carry Aruba’s name beyond its shores, including Hilward Croes. Attendees were invited to view a mini-exhibition of Erasmus’ sculptures as a lasting tribute.

Musical performances were provided by Banda Notas de Amor, featuring Shurby Maria, Juan Tromp, and Remi Flanegin. Musician Fio Western was unable to attend due to health reasons. The musical program guided the audience through Caribbean rhythms, ancestral influences, and traditional Dande music, symbolically connecting Aruba with Bonaire and Curaçao.

Lacle described the evening as a collective celebration of memory, culture, and gratitude, emphasizing the importance of honoring those who shaped Aruba’s past while inspiring future generations.
