SCHIPHOL – Severe winter weather has caused widespread flight disruptions at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, prompting KLM to cancel 80 flights on Friday. The airline announced that the cancellations were made as a preventive measure due to forecasts of snow and icy conditions expected overnight.
Most of the canceled flights are European routes, which normally operate at high frequency throughout the day. Over the past week, hundreds of flights have already been canceled at Schiphol due to persistent winter weather. While conditions on Thursday were relatively stable—allowing KLM to operate nearly all scheduled flights—this was not expected to continue into Friday.
KLM stated that, for now, the situation for the remainder of the day appears manageable. Importantly, the airline confirmed that the two KLM flights scheduled for Aruba on Friday will operate as normal.
More Clarity for Passengers
“By canceling flights in advance, we can provide timely clarity to our passengers and avoid last-minute cancellations,” KLM said on Thursday afternoon. “We are making every effort to rebook passengers on the next available flight with open seats.”
According to Schiphol Airport, nearly 1,200 flights were scheduled for Friday, though several have been canceled. On Thursday, 1,055 flights departed from and arrived at Schiphol.
Power Outage Identified
After several days of heavy snowfall, electricity demand exceeded expectations, leading to a brief power outage early Thursday morning. Schiphol also reported that approximately 169,000 passengers passed through the airport that day—more than originally anticipated. Some previously delayed baggage was also successfully processed.
