Porta pa Harmonia: Inspiring Youth Interest in Aruba’s Cultural Music

Aruba – After weeks of intensive preparation, Porta pa Harmonia is entering the final phase before its public presentation. This initiative, including the Dande workshop, provides young Arubans with the opportunity to explore and develop their musical talents.

Albertico ‘Tico’ Kelly, a violin, mandolin, and bajo instructor at the Arubaanse Muziek School, contributed significantly to the Dande workshop held in Semeleerstraat, Noord. Tico emphasizes that Dande is not just a performance—it’s a blessing, a way to convey good wishes from house to house during the New Year celebrations.

The workshop aims to spark interest in Dande among youth, helping preserve this unique Aruban folk tradition from one generation to the next. Participants learn not only the songs but also the stories and cultural anecdotes tied to each neighborhood, reinforcing a sense of community and cultural identity.

Raquel Lampe, instructor of Arts and Culture, highlighted the immense value of teaching young people music from an early age. Porta pa Harmonia offers free access, giving youth the opportunity to master musical instruments and understand the rich tradition of Aruban folk music—even for those who may not have financial resources to attend formal music schools.

By bringing music education into neighborhoods, Porta pa Harmonia bridges the gap between contemporary youth and traditional cultural music, nurturing future generations of musicians. The program also fosters personal development, teamwork, and confidence, while keeping Aruba’s musical heritage alive.

Future workshops plan to include performances of the Dera Gay, Himno y Bandera, as well as waltzes, dances, tumbas, and mazurkas, giving youth a broad exposure to the island’s musical folklore. Tico Kelly underscores that this initiative will ultimately produce more musicians on the island, strengthen cultural pride, and ensure that Aruba’s folk traditions continue to thrive.

Porta pa Harmonia is more than a music workshop—it’s a doorway to cultural education, personal growth, and community connection, offering youth a chance to experience the joy and discipline of music while embracing their heritage.
