Children and Teens Must Learn to Face Challenges Because Challenges Are Part of Life

James Sneek, Director of the Youth Helpline Foundation (131), spoke with Matutino DIARIO about the importance of guiding children and teenagers in a positive and supportive way. He emphasized that adults should not only tell young people what not to do, but instead explain clearly what is expected of them.

Sneek highlighted that if we want young people in Aruba to greet others politely—saying “good morning,” “good afternoon,” or offering help when someone needs it—then adults must model this behavior themselves. “We must set the example,” he said. As part of prevention, he explained that it is better to guide children before problems arise, rather than focusing only on corrective measures after issues occur.

He stressed that it is essential to build trust by forming healthy relationships in the home, at school, in sports clubs, and even on the streets. When young people feel supported, they are more likely to display positive behavior.

Sneek noted that today’s families are different from those of past generations, and one of the most important things adults can give children is time. “Trust plays a crucial role,” he said. “Instead of judging a young person for what they did, we should try to understand why they did it. This sends a powerful message: ‘I am listening to you. I am here for you. I may not agree with your behavior, but I am here to support you.’”

According to Sneek, this approach builds confidence, encourages communication, and prevents adults from reacting emotionally before listening. “Children and teenagers must learn how to deal with challenges, because challenges are part of life. They shape you, strengthen you, and help you grow as a person,” he added.

Sneek emphasized that the community must stand behind its youth, offering them guidance and support as they face life’s difficulties.
