Photographer Hubert Tiel Passes Away, Leaving Aruba’s Sports Community in Mourning

The Aruban sports and media community is mourning the loss of Hubert Tiel, a respected photographer and journalist from DIARIO Aruba, who passed away on Friday afternoon after a brief battle with illness.

Known for his courageous spirit and deep passion for photography, Hubert built a long-standing career documenting Aruba’s events, particularly in motorsports. He was also well known for his work with the Aruba Fire Department and for asking sharp, insightful questions during government press conferences — even earning official recognition from the government for his contributions during the pandemic.

Motorsports, especially rotary engines, were Hubert’s greatest passion. He spent countless hours capturing race moments at Palo Marga Raceway Park and previously at Curaçao’s Koral Tabak track since the 1970s. He founded the sports newspaper Chalapi and collaborated with many local media outlets, visiting garages around the island to photograph racing cars and motorcycles.

Just a year ago, Hubert donated a vast collection of his historical photographs to the National Archives of Aruba, a gesture deeply appreciated by the community.

His loss leaves a void in Aruba’s journalism and sports photography scene. The DIARIO staff, along with the Mansur family, extend their heartfelt condolences to Hubert’s loved ones.

May our friend “Furai” rest in peace.
