Earlier this week, the morning newspaper Diario celebrated its 45th anniversary of publication.
To commemorate this important milestone, a special discussion and exhibition titled “Sharing Our Heritage” took place at the Arubiana-Caribiana Department of the National Library of Aruba.
The event gathered active members of the press and Papiamento-speaking media, along with former Prime Minister and current Parliamentarian Evelyn Wever-Croes. During the interactive session, participants discussed several topics, including the role of the press in Aruba’s major historical events, such as the Status Aparte movement, and the contributions of Diario’s founder, the late Jossy Mansur, a close friend of Betico Croes.
Wever-Croes reflected on her government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, stating that its global recognition for success was largely due to effective daily communication strategies, including press conferences held every evening at 7:00 p.m. She emphasized the crucial role of the local press in keeping citizens informed, noting that such transparency would not have been possible without media collaboration.
Another topic addressed during the event was fake news and artificial intelligence (AI). Wever-Croes highlighted the importance of verifying information before believing or sharing it, reminding everyone to double-check the credibility of news on social media platforms.
“I congratulate Mrs. Nuhad Mansur, Mr. Jossito Mansur, and the entire Mansur family for Diario’s 45th anniversary, and I wish the newspaper continued success in informing the community for many years to come,” said Wever-Croes.
