Travel Sustainably and Make a Positive Impact on Aruba’s Environment

For the well-being of our planet, it’s important to integrate sustainable practices into our everyday lives, including our vacations. Even small choices can have a big impact when it comes to protecting the environment. While you’re in Aruba, here are 7 simple and eco-friendly practices you can incorporate to make your stay more sustainable.

Join us as we head towards a greener, more sustainable future!

1. 🚶‍♂️ Sightsee Responsibly

Aruba’s natural beauty is one of its greatest assets. When exploring the island, be sure to stay on marked paths and roads to avoid damaging flora and fauna, especially in protected areas such as the sand dunes by the California Lighthouse, Aruba’s National Park, and Spaans Lagoen. Whether you’re on a UTV, ATV, jeep, or walking, always respect nature and its surroundings.

Consider opting for public transportation or walking when exploring Oranjestad or San Nicolas to reduce your carbon footprint.

2. 🌿 Choose Green Activities

Opt for eco-friendly activities that reduce your carbon footprint and allow you to connect with Aruba’s natural beauty. Consider activities such as:

  • Hiking

  • Paddleboarding

  • Biking

  • Kayaking

  • Snorkeling

Suggestion: Visit Aruba’s National Park and take a hike on one of the scenic nature trails. You’ll experience breathtaking views and encounter rugged rock formations, vibrant cacti, and beautiful coastal waters.

3. 🧳 Pack Reusable Items and Say No to Plastics

When packing, bring a reusable water bottle to avoid single-use plastic bottles. Aruba has even banned single-use plastics like straws, bags, and cups.

In addition, purchase reusable items on the island, such as coolers or biodegradable plates and utensils. Avoid plastic beach floats that can be easily blown away and pollute the sea.

4. 🌞 Use Reef-Friendly Sunscreen

To protect Aruba’s coral reefs and marine life, make sure to use reef-safe sunscreen that does not contain Oxybenzone. Opt for sunscreens with Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide as active ingredients.

If you don’t have reef-safe sunscreen before your trip, you can easily purchase it on the island at local stores or pharmacies that offer brands like Arubalife Organics or Aruba Aloe.

5. 🛍️ Think and Support Local

Support local businesses to help benefit Aruba’s community and reduce the need for outsourcing. You can shop at local markets, dine at restaurants that use local ingredients, and buy handmade souvenirs from local artisans.

Check out local farmer’s markets or visit events like the Aruba Ostrich Farm Market, where you can find unique crafts, jewelry, and homemade products.

6. 🏖️ Participate in Beach Cleanups

While Aruba hosts annual beach cleanups, you don’t have to wait for these events to contribute. Bring a trash bag along with you during your beach outings and help keep the beaches clean by picking up any litter you come across.

Aruba has also introduced recycling stations at several beaches, with plans for more in the future!

7. 💡 Save Energy

When staying at a resort or rental, don’t forget to turn off the lights, air conditioning, and unplug electronics when you leave your room. Many resorts are implementing eco-friendly technologies that automatically shut off systems when windows or doors are left open.

This simple action can contribute to reducing energy consumption and keeping Aruba sustainable for future generations.

🌱 Conclusion

Aruba is committed to maintaining its beauty and sustainability, and you can play a vital role in preserving it by adopting these eco-friendly practices during your stay. Every small change counts, and together we can help ensure a greener, more sustainable future for our island paradise.
