On September 12, 2025, the University of Aruba (UA) celebrated the installation of its new rector, Sue-Ann Lee, in a heartfelt ceremony.
The event marked a significant show of support for Lee, with a diverse group of prominent leaders, university staff, and community members in attendance. The atmosphere was filled with warmth and a shared sense of purpose, setting a hopeful tone for the future of the university.
A highlight of the ceremony was the presence of the Minister of Education, Relations within the Kingdom, and Sports, Mrs. Gerlien Croes, whose attendance underscored the strong commitment to the university. During her inaugural speech, Rector Lee, a “child of the land,” shared a powerful and deeply personal vision, incorporating the theme: “Together Forward: University of Aruba at the Heart of Our Island.” Her words resonated with the audience as she committed herself to transforming the university into more than just an academic center but a true catalyst for national progress.
A Vision for an “Educational Ecosystem”: Rector Lee’s speech expressed a forward-thinking approach for the University of Aruba. She proposed shifting from a traditional “system” mindset to an “ecosystem” mentality, where the university is interconnected with the human aspects of Aruba’s society.
“Our purpose is to cultivate collective knowledge with a sense of responsibility, a commitment to continuous learning, and a belief that education is a collective effort,” she expressed.
Her vision is anchored in four key pillars designed to strengthen the university’s impact:
- Academic Excellence and Research Culture: Strengthening teaching and research focused on Aruba’s needs and those of the region.
- Equity, Inclusion, and Engagement: Creating an environment where everyone feels valued, seen, and empowered.
- Sustainability and Relevance: Preparing students to thrive in a world shaped by climate change, AI, and global economic shifts.
- Global Leadership Anchored in Local Culture: Ensuring students’ success internationally while staying rooted in Aruba’s culture and heritage.
A Call for Collective Action and Lasting Impact: In a moving conclusion, Rector Lee spoke directly from the heart about her motivations. “Tonight, my children are here. They may not understand all the details of this moment, but they know why I am here. I am here for them, for you, and for the generations that will inherit this island.”
With passion, she emphasized that her vision could not be achieved by one person alone. “It will require all of us—faculty, staff, students, alumni, government, businesses, NGOs, and civil society—to work together to build a vibrant educational ecosystem with impact.”
The ceremony served as a powerful call to action for all Arubans. As Aruba nears its 40th anniversary of Status Aparte, Rector Lee’s leadership reminds everyone to reinforce the university’s core mission: to serve, elevate, and empower the people of Aruba.
“One day, when we look back with pride, what truly matters is that each one of you can stand tall, proud of yourselves and the difference you made for Aruba. Let us walk this journey together, for our island and for the generations to come.
