The MEP faction in the Aruban Parliament has officially submitted a request to the President of Parliament for an urgent public meeting (openbare bijeenkomst) to discuss the current state of elderly care in Aruba.
This request follows a recent NOS news report from the Netherlands titled “Crisis in Elder Care in Aruba: Families Hardly Dare to Speak”, which has sparked widespread concern within the community. The report described alarming conditions in Aruba’s elderly care facilities, with some families expressing fear about speaking out publicly.
According to the MEP faction, the situation raises serious questions about the government’s management, execution, and accountability in relation to elderly care services. They emphasized the urgent need for clarity, transparency, and action from authorities.
The MEP has requested that Minister of Health, Social Affairs, Elderly Care, and Addiction Management, Drs. Mervin Wyatt-Ras, along with representatives from the Directorate of Elderly Affairs, attend the meeting to provide detailed information on the current situation and answer questions from Parliament and the public.
The MEP faction outlined several key objectives for the meeting:
- To understand the current situation within Aruba’s elderly care sector.
- To learn what immediate and long-term measures are being taken.
- To clarify how the government is collaborating with care institutions and families.
- To receive information on concrete steps to prevent abuse and improve the well-being of the elderly.
The MEP faction expressed hope that the President of Parliament will honor their request promptly, allowing Parliament and the public to gain a full understanding of what actions the government is taking to ensure dignified and humane care for Aruba’s senior citizens.
